Planet Zoo 2 animals by region — every continent, ocean and its full species list

The Planet Zoo 2 Zoopedia files all 136 launch species under 12 regions — 7 land regions and 5 oceans. This page lists every region with its complete roster, so you can plan a continent-themed area, find out which species are unique to one part of the world, and see at a glance how much choice each region gives you. All of it comes from the game's own data rather than a fan list.

Counts are generated from the official Planet Zoo 2 Zoopedia export (2026-10-20). A species is counted in every region it is listed for, so the column adds up to 214 across 136 animals.

How region data works (and when it does not matter)

Region is the field that decides where an animal is from, not where it can live. Two things have to match before a habitat is accepted: the biome and the enclosure type. A species from the Amazon and one from the Congo can share an enclosure if both accept Rainforest and both use a Habitat; two species from the same continent cannot if one is a fish and the other is a bird.

That is why this page is useful for planning and not for rules. Use it to pick a roster that looks coherent, then use the compatibility chart to check whether the animals you picked can actually be housed together, and the biome hub to see which other species accept the same climate.

Every region in detail

Each section is the complete species list for that region: enclosure type, every biome the species accepts, its conservation status and its barrier requirement.

FAQ

How many regions are in Planet Zoo 2?
12 are used in the Zoopedia continent field — 7 land regions and 5 oceans: Asia, Africa, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Europe, North America, South America, Australasia, Atlantic Ocean, Arctic, Arctic Ocean, Southern Ocean. Between them they cover 214 species-to-region records across 136 animals, because 51 species are listed for more than one region.
Which region has the most animals in Planet Zoo 2?
Asia with 47 species, followed by Africa (44). The smallest is Southern Ocean with 1, so it is the hardest region to build a full themed area around.
Do animals have to come from the same continent to share a habitat?
No. Continent plays no part in the housing check — only biome and enclosure type do. A South American species and an African one can share a paddock if both accept the same biome and both live in a Habitat. The compatibility chart judges all 1,358 pairs on exactly those two fields.
Is the continent field the same as a map region?
Not exactly. It is a Zoopedia attribute describing where the species lives in the wild, and it is what the game groups animals by. Campaign maps and building themes are separate systems, so a continent list is a research aid for themed areas rather than a rule about which map you can use.
Which region should I build first?
Asia, purely because it gives you the widest roster to choose from. If you want a themed area with a clear identity, pick a region with a strong single biome instead — the biome is what the habitat actually has to match.
