Planet Zoo 2 game modes & multiplayer — Career, Sandbox, Franchise explained
There are three modes and no multiplayer, and those are the two facts most searches about this game get wrong. Below is what each mode actually is, straight from Frontier's own game-modes page, plus a straight answer on co-op, crossplay and the Challenge mode that no longer exists by that name.

The three modes
Career
You start as the new Conservation Coordinator at FEN (Fauna and Ecosystems Network). A globe-spanning story mode: visit Wildlife Reserves, distinctive zoos and diverse scenarios, meet the cast, and improve zoos worldwide as you go. If you want a guided tour through the game's systems, start here.
Sandbox
The unlimited creative mode, and the one with the most options. Frontier's wording is that you “choose the level of simulation and challenge that works for you” before you build — so money, welfare pressure and animal availability are all dials you set rather than fixed rules. This is where the enclosure-planning and compatibility work pays off fastest.
Franchise
Your own international network of interconnected zoos and Wildlife Reserves. Animals are traded with other players, and there are community conservation efforts to contribute to. It is the economic mode: budgets, animal market, reputation, and the only place where other people's zoos shape what you can buy.
Planet Hub all modes
New in the sequel. A global menu available in every mode where you track progress, read performance data, jump between your sites and make research and conservation decisions. Think of it as the layer above the individual zoo.

Multiplayer: the definitive answer
There is no multiplayer in Planet Zoo 2
Frontier states it directly in their official FAQ: “While there is no multiplayer in Planet Zoo 2, players will be able to share their creations and download others' parks and blueprints via the in-game workshop, across platforms.” That sentence also tells you what the social layer is: asynchronous sharing, not synchronous play.
Steam's own tags agree
The Steam store page for the game lists no Co-op, no Multi-player and no Cross-Platform Multiplayer category. When the store, the publisher FAQ and the feature list all line up, there is nothing left to interpret.
What you can do with other players
Two things. In Franchise you trade animals with other players, and through the Frontier Workshop you upload your creations and download other people's parks and blueprints across platforms. Those are the entire social surface of the game.
Common multiplayer questions
| Question people search | Answer |
|---|---|
| planet zoo 2 multiplayer | Not in the game. Official. |
| planet zoo 2 coop / co-op | No co-operative play. You cannot co-manage a single zoo with a friend. |
| planet zoo 2 crossplay | Not applicable — there is no multiplayer to cross-play. Workshop creations are shared across platforms. |
| is planet zoo 2 multiplayer | No. Single-player with asynchronous community sharing. |
| can you play planet zoo 2 with friends | Only indirectly: trade animals in Franchise, or share and download parks in the Frontier Workshop. |
| planet zoo 2 multiplayer mod | No official multiplayer exists, so any mod would be adding a netcode layer the game was not built with — treat claims of a working multiplayer mod with suspicion. |
| planet zoo 2 zookeeper mode | No such mode. First-person keeper play has never been announced. Keepers are staff you manage, not a camera you inhabit. |
| planet zoo modes explained | Career (story journey), Sandbox (unlimited creative, with your own simulation level) and Franchise (international network with player-to-player animal trading). Plus the Planet Hub across all of them. |
| planet zoo which mode to play | Career to learn the systems, Sandbox to build freely, Franchise for the economy and player trading. See the recommendation below. |
Which mode should you start in?
New to zoo management games
Start in Career. It introduces the build tools, animal needs and conservation loop in a fixed order, and it is the only mode where the game tells you what a good zoo looks like before you have to invent one.
Here to build
Go straight to Sandbox and set simulation low. Everything on this site — the compatibility chart, the barrier grades, the enclosure counts — is most useful when you are planning a layout rather than fighting a budget.
Here for the economy
Franchise. It is the only mode with a live animal market, and the only one where other players' actions change what you can afford. If you liked the management half of Planet Zoo 1, this is the direct successor.
Something to know before you invest in Franchise
Planet Zoo 2 is single-player, so “Franchise” is not a persistent shared server you play on with others. It is your own network of zoos with a player-driven trading layer.
Save compatibility and the console caveat
Nothing has been announced about carrying a Franchise or Career save between PC and console. What is confirmed is that the console versions include a complexity meter — a build budget used to keep performance stable — while the PC version does not. So a design that runs perfectly on a PC may need trimming on PS5 or Xbox, and the Workshop is the bridge: share it on PC, download it on console, and expect to adjust for the complexity limit.

FAQ
Does Planet Zoo 2 have multiplayer?
No. Frontier's own answer is unambiguous: “While there is no multiplayer in Planet Zoo 2, players will be able to share their creations and download others' parks and blueprints via the in-game workshop, across platforms.” So there is no co-op, no crossplay matchmaking and no server browser — the social layer is the Frontier Workshop.
Is there co-op or can you play Planet Zoo 2 with friends?
Not in the same zoo at the same time. You can trade animals with other players in Franchise mode and share or download parks and blueprints through the Frontier Workshop, but two people cannot co-manage one zoo. Steam's own category list for the game contains no Co-op, Multi-player or Cross-Platform Multiplayer tag.
What game modes are in Planet Zoo 2?
Three: <strong>Career</strong>, where you join FEN (the Fauna and Ecosystems Network) as a new Conservation Coordinator; <strong>Sandbox</strong>, the traditional unlimited creative mode where you choose your own level of simulation; and <strong>Franchise</strong>, where you run an international network of zoos and Wildlife Reserves and trade animals with other players. There is also a new <strong>Planet Hub</strong>, available in all three modes, which is the global menu for tracking progress, reading performance data, visiting your sites and making research and conservation decisions.
What is the difference between Career and Franchise in Planet Zoo 2?
Career is a scripted journey: you travel the world visiting Wildlife Reserves, zoos and scenarios while meeting a cast of characters. Franchise is the management sandbox with consequences: you build your own network of sites and animals are traded between real players, so the animal market is other people's zoos rather than a fixed shop. Franchise is where the economic half of the game lives.
Is there a Challenge mode?
Not as a separate mode in Planet Zoo 2. Frontier describes the Sandbox as letting you “choose the level of simulation and challenge that works for you”, so the limited-money experience is a setting inside Sandbox rather than a mode with its own name. If you are looking for the old Challenge mode, that is where it went.
Is there a zoo management mode where I only run the zoo?
No dedicated one. Franchise is the closest thing: it is the mode with budgets, animal trading, staff and reputation to manage across an international network. There is no separate “zookeeper mode” or first-person keeper simulation — Frontier has never announced one.
Does Planet Zoo 2 have crossplay or cross-save?
There are no multiplayer modes to cross-play, so crossplay does not apply. What is confirmed is cross-platform sharing: the Frontier Workshop lets players upload and download parks and blueprints across platforms. Steam's categories for the game do not list Cross-Platform Multiplayer.
Can I play the same zoo across PC and console?
The Frontier Workshop is cross-platform for creations, so blueprints and parks you share can be picked up on another platform. What is not promised is a synced save file that carries your progress between devices — that has not been announced, and the console versions carry a complexity meter that the PC build does not.
Does Planet Zoo 2 have a demo or early access?
Neither has been announced. The game launches in full on 13 October 2026 — there is no early access period and no public demo, so any page offering one is not official.
